BOOK REVIEW
I’m a bit of a book worm it has to be said, and I have set myself the challenge of reading one book a month. This might not sound like much to some, but sometimes finding the time to read can be tricky. I’m pleased to say I’ve already reached 12 books read this year.
I do like to mix up the genres that I read – and also in the mix are books relating to my job and work in general. So I thought I’d share with you Fans of Plans in this fortnight’s blog a few work related books that I have found useful…
The Joy of Work
I’m going to have to start by talking about Bruce Daisley’s book The Joy of Work.
In this book, Bruce explores 30 ways to fix work culture. On an individual basis, it’s about how to get more done and feel less stressed.
I was lucky enough to be present at a talk that Bruce gave at an event in September, his fascinating insights into what companies are doing well and doing differently is certainly thought provoking. He has worked at organisations including Twitter and Google.
Start Now…
Another book that I have read in the last twelve months is Start Now, Get Perfect Later by Rob Moore. I don’t know about you, but I can be a great procrastinator and this book gives great ways to push yourself into action. We all know that sometime just getting started on something is the hardest part – once we get over that, we can get into a flow. Rob draws on well-known techniques, including the Pomodoro method (this involves setting a timer for 25 minutes of work followed by a 5 minute break).
Employee Experience…
A book that’s fairly new to the shelves is Monetising the Employee Experience by Mike Sharples and Nicholas Wardle.
This book looks at how to prove return on investment (ROI) for investing in people and unlocking lost productivity. As a communications professional, specialising in internal communication, it can be really hard to prove how investing in employee initiatives can help the bottom line of a business. This book is all about how to approach this and prove ROI to key stakeholders.
